This is a press release from the White Mountain National Forest:
As the trees let loose their leaves, hikers coming to the White Mountain
National Forest need to be aware how quickly the season is changing. In
this shoulder season, it is particularly important to come prepared for
colder and wetter weather.
With shorter days, consider less daylight into your plans. Hikers should
start in time to end their hike well before it gets dark. Always carry a
flashlight, no matter how long the planned hike.
Hikers should also carry extra clothing and wear appropriate footwear.
Check weather forecasts. Winter conditions including cold temperatures,
snow, high winds, and icy pathways may be encountered on a hike,
especially if gaining elevation. Consider crampons for your shoes if
hiking above tree line.
Fall season is also hunting season, running from early September to late
December. Be sure to wear bright clothes and stay aware of your
surroundings.
Always remember to hikeSafe and follow the Hiker Responsibility Code. Tell
someone where you are going and when you plan on returning. Be flexible.
If conditions slow you down or you find you are just not prepared for the
conditions, be willing to turn back early and hike another day.
